The Container House McGregor

The Container House, Easy for Dayz

The Container House in McGregor certainly lives up to its name, “Easy for Dayz.”  It’s one of those accommodation establishments you’d like to linger a little longer if you are able to.  This two bedroomed hybrid container house is relatively new to the accommodation scene in the village.  Even so, it has become quite the talking point amongst all who have had the pleasure of staying here!

It’s not very difficult locating a McGregor address.  The church is usually a good landmark.  Should you find yourself driving up Voortrekker Road, pass the church on your left and two blocks up a yellow door on the right catches your eye.  You’ll have arrived at the Container House.  From Voortrekker Road, the white washed façade may seem deceiving, and you may wonder why it’s called the container house.  On closer inspection, and on entering from Plein Street, the actual structure becomes visible.

Steps lead up to a covered deck that runs the length of the house.  There is a built in braai with ample seating space.  Large sliding doors open up fully and it honestly feels as if the outside is inside and vice versa.  You could literally chat to someone in the splash pool while sitting in the living area!  Did we mention the views from the deck?  The most glorious mountain vistas!  Each night the play of light is different, but always beautiful.  Quite honestly, few things beat sitting out on the deck sipping on some good McGregor wine while watching the sun dip behind the mountains.  In our case, the complimentary bottle of chilled pinot noir rosé from Lords Winery went down very well!

If like us, you’ve never been in a container house before, the one thing that will surprise you is how spacious it is.  With two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a lovely open plan kitchen and living area, it did not feel cramped at all.  And now we totally get how it’s possible for people’s entire worldly possessions to be shipped to a new continent in a single container!

The well equipped kitchen ensures that you have all of your creature comforts right at hand. Fittings and appliances are of top quality.  Yes, this is definitely something that many accommodation establishments overlook, and it certainly is something that makes a lasting impression.  Water is heated by a gas system, which means there is always hot water on demand for those chilly Karoo nights!  Of course on the hot summer days, there’s nothing quite like a dip in the pool!  We loved that additional towels were provided for outdoor use.  This was another one of the small personal touches that didn’t go unnoticed.

So next time you are planning a trip to McGregor, make sure to stay in the Container House.  You can enquire via Destination McGregor.  They’ll also be able to give you some fabulous travel tips on eating out as well as things to see and do in and around the village.

It does look very spacious indeed. Those views! Love the terraced steps and the luxury of the dipping pool.
