McGregor Escape

McGregor Accommodation

We recently had a little McGregor Escape.  Well, it wasn’t quite an escape, as we were working.  But hey, work is not a job when we get to photograph lovely accommodation establishments in our favourite Karoo dorpie.  In colab with Fiona from Destination McGregor we got to showcase three lovely spaces.  They are all are available to rent if you are planning a visit to McGregor sometime.

A MCGREGOR ESCAPE TO TINDALL COTTAGE

The first of three cottages photographed was Tindall Cottage.  As we came up the drive in the little pan handle, the first thing that struck us was the beautiful setting.  The tree with it’s bright pink blooms set the tone for what was to follow.  Lydia has created the most sacred space in the garden.  No matter where you look, there is a little creature looking back at you.  I also came to realize there is somebody who loves bunnies more than I do.

The house has not one, but two patios.  The first,  leading off from the living area is a great spot for that morning cup of coffee whilst taking in the lovely birdlife.  The second patio leading from the kitchen,  with its touch of Morocco is the perfect sundowner spot.  And we all know that in South Africa, sundowners are synonymous with lighting a fire.  There are braai facilities and wood is provided.

The interior of Tindall Cottage is equally as lovely.  This space is adorned with trinkets collected on travels.  We have not seen such a well equipped kitchen in a long while.  You may even receive a few little surprises in the cookie jar and the fridge.

With two bedrooms and two bathrooms, it makes the perfect getaway for two couples.  It’s just a hop skip and jump from our favourite McGregor hangouts too. Without further ado, a few images to entice you.

A MCGREGOR ESCAPE TO BOKMAKIERIE COTTAGE

The second of the cottages we documented during our McGregor Escape was the cute Bokmakierie cottage.   For those who do not know what a Bokamkierie is, it is a bird.  Named after it’s very unique and unusual call.   Owners Barbara and Martin are avid birders, and believe it or not, Martin can mimic the EXACT call of a Bokmakierie.  I was duly impressed! Bird book and binoculars are at hand if you’d like to do a bit of birdwatching.

Barbara & Martin have converted a space on their property into the sweet Bokmakierie cottage.  We were surprised at how spacious it was inside.  With both the doors open, the most glorious draught wafts through.  I can imagine having a little siesta inside on a balmy McGregor afternoon.  Come sunset, the enclosed  patio area is where you want to be.  With views across the mountains, and little birds coming to visit, it’s a beautiful tranquil spot to enjoy a sundowner or two.

If you are an animal lover, you’ll enjoy the resident kitties.  Harry, the ginger and white kitty, was especially inquisitive to see what we were up to.  He does not make a nuisance of himself, merely announces his presence from time to time.  The other two are a little more shy and mostly stay in the main house with their mom and dad.

Bokmakierie cottage is a the perfect little spot for a lazy few days away.

A MCGREGOR ESCAPE TO IONA AT SKYE COTTAGE

The last of the cottages we photographed during our McGregor Escape was Iona at Skye cottage.  Oh my word.  We’ve walked past this gem so many times before during our McGregor visits.  We could not believe that finally we’d have the opportunity of seeing the inside!

This cute little cottage with its thatched roof and  green painted stable doors dates from the 19th century.  It is one of the oldest original labourer’s dwellings in McGregor.   It has thick white washed walls which makes it super cool in summer and cozy in Winter.

Iona Cottage is compact, yet it does not feel cramped.  In summer or on a sunny winters afternoon you’ll want to spend time in the gorgeous courtyard.   In the summer months you’ll have the added bonus of the aroma of roses and lavender.  And what a bonus that your car is safe and secure in the garage leading off from the patio.  Iona cottage is situated right on the edge of town with easy access to several lovely walking paths.

If you are visiting in winter think red wine or hot chocolate.  Snuggled up inside and enjoy the board games you’ll find in the cupboard.  Lovely owner Penny has filled the space with treasures collected on travels. We loved the super homely atmosphere that she has created.
